The Salon is Sacred...

I just sat down on my ridiculous couch. It's apparently an Italian leather vintage antique. The sturdy (not to mention heavy) beast of a piece of furniture looks like Carmel and chocolate exploded between every button. My old roommate and i used to fill each crevasse with peanut M&M's. If you ever needed a quarter, safety pin, earrings, you could find it in our couch. I'm propped up on pillows i got from good will several years ago. It's nice to sit for a few moments before my next hair appointment.

Today is hair day. I am trying to squeeze in all of my friend's and family's cut and colors before i leave the country. Hair is such an interesting relationship. You get to spend a couple of hours every 4-6 weeks with one person. It's just frequent enough to stay relatively up-to-date. While parting hair and gliding through new growth with the rat tail comb, people begin to talk...  Politics, Religion, Racism, Children, Travel, Fashion, Marriage, Being Single, Sex, Sex Positions, Dieting, Missions, God, Feelings, Friends, Finances, Fiance's, Dogs, Cats, Pets, Cooking, Ingredients, Organic, Work, Bosses, Wives, Husbands, Balding, Grey Hair... nothing is Taboo. I think that is my favorite thing about hair. Hair is Sacred.

The place where you do hair- whether it be the ritziest salon in New York City, or the mom and pop shop in the back woods of east Tennessee- that place of blow dryers, color, bleach, scissors, rollers, curling irons, flat irons, and foils, is sacred. It's like fight club. The Salon is safe. When you sit down in that Hydraulic chair, no matter how rusty, you are safe... safe to unload out loud all that is on your mind. And after you've spilled every story and asked every question, you get to walk out the door with freshly colored, cut, washed, and styled hair. And hopefully it's exactly what you wanted or even better than you imagined...

Today is hair day. It's time to get off this couch do some hair!!!
